Befor the western influence Okonkwo was known for being very powerful, stronged willed, and the leader of his clan. This shows us that Okonkwo was very much unstoppable. “Okonkwo was not afraid of war. He was a man of action, a man of war. Unlike his father he could stand the look the blood. In Umuofia’s first war he was the first to bring home a human head” (Achebe 10). This shows that Okonkwo would not let anything get in the way of him. That was something no one had done before. It showed everyone that he was strong and not afraid to fight no matter who it is. After throwing the cat Okonkwo gained lots of self confidence, which helped get further in life.
Okonkwo’s response to the new culture was not superior. He was in a way afraid of the change. He also thought that he could get some of his clan back if he stood up and told them that things were not right. “ The white man was very clever. He came quietly and peaceably with his religion. We were amused at his foolishness and allowed him to stay. Now we have fallen apart.”(Achebe 176 ) As the western influence came more and more Okonkwo lose his self confidence they began to invade the clan.
On the other hand through the whole book was Okonkwo was going through tons of fears and weakness. So maybe he has not quite changed but have given up on fighting back on all of fears and weakness. Achebe had said “perhaps down in his heart Okonkwo was not a cruel man. But his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness. It was the fear of himself (Achebe 13). Okonkwo feared more of what he was then what was around
