Dear Gentlemen of the Continental Congress,
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” (Source D). These words were stated by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of independence. One sentence from here will be a piece of evidence used countless times when arguing for the rights of people with my skin color. This line is “all men a created equal”. While this stands true, I also have to point out that one thing I see when I read this quote is that one of our unalienable rights is the pursuit of happiness. This letter is my pursuit of happiness.
In which seems like an eternity ago, my sister and I were promised freedom. Before our first master died, she had a legal contract that enabled our release after her passing. After death took her, her nephew swooped in, on the prowl for her money and possessions. He disregarded this agreement between us and our master, and made it so it was impossible for us to reach our lawyer. From then on I have been thrown into the hellish world I currently reside in of slavery.
