This is true because Poe uses subtle hints to foreshadow Montressor’s desire for revenge and how he will achieve his revenge. For instance, after Montressor had learned that Fortunato had disrespected his family name, he states, “I promised myself that I would make him pay for this — that I would have revenge” (Poe 68). Poe foreshadows the later actions in this story and emphasizes the theme of revenge. Henceforth, Montressor manipulates Fortunato when they are discussing their friend Luchresi, whom Montressor says “knows as much about wines” as Fortunato does, using Fortunato’s pride about his taste in wine against him (Poe 69). Montressor also uses Fortunato's current state of health as a way to coerce him down into his vaults, ultimately to his demise: “But I can see you are trembling with the cold. Come on in and see us! Let us go back before it’s too late” (Poe 70). Montressor knows Fortunato will not return above ground until he reaches his long awaited Amontillado, but he still does not want to cause doubt towards himself in order to not reveal his vengeful plan.
