Most of the countries in the English-speaking world are multicultural. Multiculturalism means the presence of different cultures or ethnic groups within one society. In Australia and Canada, for example, some people will say that multiculturalism is an enrichment and that the common culture there has become vastly richer. Although some think it is important that newcomers should learn and understand the countries values and institutions.
Even though some people want newcomers to learn about the values and institutions, others think that they do not have to give up on their own culture and identity. An example is in Canada, where they are very open-minded when it comes to welcoming newcomers. More than one third of their population is from another country and not only that, but many Canadians descend from British or French forefathers. They are willing to help and support newcomers when it comes to settling down in Canada. That will make it easier for newcomers to assimilate, when they are welcomed and supported. Some find it difficult to do just that, but that is only because they do not have enough knowledge of why people immigrate. They have wrong assumptions and ideas about newcomers, which can make it harder for them because they do not feel welcomed. With complications like these, integration will maybe take longer and be more difficult for them. However, some do not know that integration can be a positive thing.
