Pathetic Fallacy Comparing the two pieces of literature we have read so far this semester, the literary device of pathetic fallacy was used best in Frankenstein. Pathetic Fallacy is a literary element that compares the weather in the story to the moods of the people in the story. In this paper I am going to discuss the sides between Frankenstein and “Rime of the Ancient Mariner.” In the end I will prove that Frankenstein used the literary device better.
Although they are not as effective as Frankenstein, there are many examples of pathetic fallacy in “Rime of the Ancient Mariner.” In part one there are examples of the sea being “icy and cold” which reflects the mariner’s sense of hopelessness. …show more content…
For instance "It was a dreary night in November" (p. 45) shows how Victor Frankenstein was in agony and pain. "Morning, dismal and wet" (p. 46) makes us feel the depressed mood of the opening paragraph. In the first paragraph, Mary Shelley creates a dark atmosphere and creates tension by using pathetic fallacy by describing the weather and time of night. She uses the phrase ''dreary night of November'' (pg. 45), this builds suspense for the reader as it gives the hint that an event is about to occur, as most horrific events occur in the middle of the night. Another example is "Autumn passed thus. I saw, with surprise and grief, the leaves decay and fall, and nature again assume the barren and bleak appearance it had worn when I first beheld the woods and the lovely moon" (p. 91). Victor also says, “by the glimmer of the half-extinguished light” (pg. 45). Victor's feelings are shown by mentioning the “dim and yellow light of the moon” (pg.
