We as Americans live in our own unique culture which makes us different from others. A lot of the plot of Othello comes from the characters being put in Venetian Culture which is part of Venice, Italy. The roots of Venetian Culture can be dated all the way back to the first human settlements on the Venice Lagoon islands date back to the 5th and 6th centuries, when the inhabitants from the mainland came to this semi-swamp area to escape the barbaric invasions that followed the fall of the Roman Empire (Netplan). When Venice had a big enough population to begin to deserve the title of city, it was then annexed to the Byzantine Empire, while maintaining its own independence (Netplan). People that come from Venice are very group oriented and look out for one another, these people are not very fond of outsiders and that really gets portrayed in the play as Othello has risen to great power and influence but is considered an outsider by the people because of his skin color. He does not get a lot of respect by the people under his rule including by his wife's, Desdamonda, father Brabantio who absolutely despises
