She is Chinese and expresses racism in many ways including instances where she talks about her granddaughter Sophie being Americanized not acting like a normal Chinese child. She Portrays racism in instances where she consistently talked about the Irish, mainly relating to the Shea family who is her son-in-law’s relatives. The Grandmother could not understand why the Shea family so much problems, she said “Why the Shea family have so much trouble? They are white people, they speak English”. Again, this is not acceptable. Not because you are white mean you are supposed to be successful or doing good. In society today, racism still very much exists. I am a victim of racism. Currently working in a bank as an Information Technologist majority of my clients are either white or Asian and they treat me very badly, saying things in front of my face such as “why do they have a black girl fixing our computers?” I personally hold my head high and continue my day completely my work. I know I am intelligent and good at what I do, why should I tolerate what they say about me? Over the years, many persons have fought long and hard to end racism, people such as Nelson Mandela he quoted “I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities.” Martin Luther King he said, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal”. Lastly, we cannot forget Rosa Parks a strong black woman who choose not to get up in order for a white person to sit down on a bus. I believe in equality. Why should we be victims of criticism and hate? I for one do not and would never tolerate discrimination but rather continue fighting for respect and
