Racism comes in different forms of stereotypes, limitation, and assumptions that affect certain ethnic groups differently than others but all have the same negative effect. This then creates stereotypical power status, giving the illusion of how one racial group is superior compared to others. An example that shows great understanding of the issue is the article, “White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard to Talk to White People About Racism” by Dr. Robin DiAngelo who explains how the topic of racism plays a huge role is social interaction between people of different ethnic groups. The author states, “It became clear over time that white people have extremely low thresholds for enduring any discomfort associated with challenges to our racial worldviews.” (DiAngelo, 36) This displays the power of stereotypes to spread around communities about each ethnic group, resulting in them facing daily obstacles of how to handle racial profiling situations that results in people not being able to protect their racial feelings and human rights, challenge white authority, meritocracy which is addressing the issue of unequal right between racial groups, and white centrality. Having to face constant abuse of power from others can trigger a person mentally to drive them to a point where they feel like they need to take drastic immediate action to stop the violence and make a statement by creating new violence. An example that displays a great understanding of the theme is from the text, “Why Vincent Chin Matters” by Frank H. Wu, who explains in depth about the injustice death of Vincent Chin by two Caucasian men. A brief background of Vincent Chin’s death was four days before he died, he was enjoying his bachelor party when all of a sudden two Caucasian men walked in and pointed out him in front of a crowd stating bluntly that they blamed him for the success of Japan’s automobile industry which ran them out of work. This blowup of extreme tension resulted in them bashing Mr. Chin’s open with a baseball bat in which he passed away four days later. The author states, “When it comes to race, nauce matters...Taken together, these perceptions can lead to resentment. And resentment can lead to hate.” (Wu, 87) This explains how race is a crucial factor that contributes to these harmful actions that affects our community, event in life and death situations.
