Racial Microaggressions
The idea of racial microaggressions has been around since the 1970s, you may not know any extremists, you think “I don’t hate black people, so I’m not racist”, but you benefit from discrimination. There are certain privileges and opportunities you have that you do not even realize since you have not been deprived in certain ways. Racial microaggressions are a type of perceived racism. They are more subtle and ambiguous than the more hostile or explicit expressions of racism, such as racial discrimination (Rainey Lecture 2015). Microaggressions are everyday verbal, visual, or environmental hostilities, slights, insults, and invalidations or mistreatment that occurs due to an individual’s ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and so on. Take a case of an Asian American with a perfect and impeccable English accent. A racist would be fascinated by the Asian American being so good at the English language and would seek to know where the Asian American was born and raised. And things like microaggressions do influence the living and quality of life of people of color. For instance, system racial describes any kind of system of inequality based on race, hence they believe they are and deserve to be in charge of something. White American males make up the population, nevertheless; they occupy the highest position such as public school superintendents, U. S. Presidents, and Executive CEO-level. In addition, America is made of whites known as, yet they deny or pretend not to see the race of the minorities because they control most of the intentional. There is also the myth of meritocracy usually expressed in statements that assert that race plays an important role in life success. Whereas America strides to be an equal society, its efforts in attaining this uniformity in class, color, status and in all social-political aspects, these efforts are usually hampered by the very problem of racism. Whereas civil right movements achieved great milestones to the problem of racism, racism still exists sometimes anonymously, in the American society. Well, who is responsible for this? You cannot make other people change their thoughts about you, further you shouldn't even want to. Nevertheless, what you can do is to be satisfied of who you are, likewise; be delighted of your ancestors that made it possible for us to walk on Earth. However, the best way to overcome racial discrimination is not to think of yourself as a race, but what you are as a unique human being, in addition; not because of your race or what others think of you. I believe racism still exists, and I believe people think being called a racist is worse than being racist, so that when they do act racist and are called out for it, they defend themselves instead of changing their behavior. Most issues and circumstances can easily recognizable with and form a good main point to the illustration of the racial context of the American society. Insults are usually unconscious behavioral remarks that convey rudeness, and degrade a person’s cultural heritage or integrity. On the other hand, assaults are usually conscious racial derogatory remarks primarily violent in nature aimed at hurting the intended victim.     The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability could be wrong, so is the belief that a particular race is superior to others. Anyone can have a belief like that - black, white, whatever. I am not about to buy into this rhetoric that any race shoulders 100% of the blame for racism in America today. Indeed, but racism is a belief, not an action. Sociologists clearly delineate between "prejudices" and acts of "discrimination." One can be racist (prejudice) and not act on it (discriminate).     I think stereotype threat is very real and is revealed in the example in my discussion above. Microagression, however, seems to be one way to understand the link between individual and structural racism, both the perpetration and experience of racism. In terms of structural racism I think the phrase itself might obscure an understanding of how structural racism works in the world of the everyday individual. Solorzano gives an example of a student who talks about feeling invisible in class not only in terms of the subject matter, but because a stereotype has systematically framed them as the type of person to whom the subject matter does not – for lack of a better word – belong. (Actually in terms of Whiteness as property this is the perfect word). This stereotyping will then, as the authors explain, cause the instructor to be less likely to call on that student.     One group that constantly faces racial persecution is African Americans. A recent incident which rekindled the racial controversy was the death of Treyvon Martin. Treyvon was a young African American boy who was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, a Hispanic-White, who perceived Martin as a threat. But this leaves one question, what made him a threat?
