For example, when Max wakes up from his illness he tells Liesel that “‘You read to me twice everyday, sometimes three times”’ (Zusak 1251). This quote demonstrates the Liesel sacrificed her time for Max, when he may not even hear her. She cares about Max enough to read to him while he is ill. In addition, when Nazi Party members were checking basements Liesel intentionally hurt herself and “...held her grazed knee in one hand…” (Zusak 1254). This quote proves that LIesel will sacrifice herself for him. She injured herself on purpose to prevent Max from being found. Liesel will take care of Max no matter what.
