Courage Illustrated Through Struggles Everyone in their life will be challenged with a situation that requires them to make a decision. The book To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, is said to be an American classic that everyone should read. The book takes place in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama, in the 1930’s during the Great Depression, a catastrophic event in US history when the stock market crashed causing many to lose their jobs and homes. This plays a major role in the book as it affects the way of how white people viewed the African Americans, as less. In the book Mrs.Dubose was near the end of her time and wanted to break a drug addiction. She was addicted to morphine, a pain relieving drug with addictive properties, but at the cost of some mental and physical abilities. This may have be why Mrs.Dubose spent all her time in bed and a wheel chair. When she finally died Atticus explained to his children that “...real courage… It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.”(Lee, 112) Atticus said this because Mrs.Dubose showed real courage. She knew she was addicted to the drug, and could have easily taken it to satisfy her craving until she died, yet she didn’t. Even though it would cause her pain because she would no longer be able to relieve it with the drug, she continued and saw it to the end no matter the consequences. She did this so she could fulfill her final need. That need is “...to leave this world beholden to nothing and nobody.” (Lee, 111) She wanted nothing else other than to die free. She didn't want any debt or have to owe anyone.All of this was very courageous of her to stand up to this internal struggle of a drug addiction.
