Examples Of Heroism In To Kill A Mockingbird
The Hero in Atticus
“Heroes represent the best of ourselves, respecting that we are human beings. A hero can be anyone from Gandhi to your classroom teacher, anyone who can show courage when faced with a problem. A hero is someone who is willing to help others in his or her best capacity.”- Ricky Martin. Heroes can be obvious or they can be anonymous extraordinaires. Heroes are all around you and you might never notice it. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch has many characteristics that exhibit his heroism.
Throughout the text there are many situations where Atticus shows gallantry. Atticus, a lawyer, was appointed to represent Tom Robinson, an African-American man falsely accused of rape by a Caucasian woman, during a time when he and his family would face scrutiny for his doing so (100). During the 1930s racism was prevalent in the southern United States, for Atticus to defend an African-American man knowing the struggles that he and his children would face was extremely gallant. Later on in the novel, Tom was moved to the local jail the night before his trial, Atticus put his life in danger

Atticus was always kind to Mrs. Dubose, a vicious, old woman who was ill, however, she was extremely rude to him and his family (133). Despite her rude behavior toward Atticus, he excused her actions by saying that she was “the bravest person I ever knew” and crediting her poor health and addiction of pain medicine. Afterwards, Atticus showed compassion by taking the time out of his own day in order to show respect to Tom Robinson’s wife by personally telling her that her husband had died after being shot dead after trying to escape jail (315). Atticus could have just sent someone else to notify Tom’s wife of his death, but he took time out of his day to do it himself and show respect for Tom and his family. Heroes must be compassionate in order to help others

In the novel, to Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Atticus is portrayed as a virtuous man with lots of integrity. Atticus always had good moral values that he wishes everyone else could have. He was also always a good parent, telling Jem and Scout about a strong sense of morality. He even told them that they couldn’t use the word “nigger” or “nigger-lover” even though everyone else does, “”Scout,” said Atticus, “nigger-lover is just one of those terms that don’t mean anything--like snot-nose. It’s hard to explain--ignorant, trashy people use it when they think somebody’s favoring Negroes over and above themselves.” (Lee 144). Atticus believes in equality for all of men so he defends African American from prejudice, and even Tom Robinson in court. This story reveals Atticus’s courage and dedication for defending Tom Robinson but Atticus demonstrates his virtue and good moral values through his quiet everyday actions and teaching his children to judge only after looking at the world through other points of view.…

Many of his actions throughout the novel show him to be brave and courageous, since courage is the main theme. He demonstrates this by the way he treats characters throughout the book. He shows true courage by defending Tom Robinson, based on what is right and what is wrong. He does his best to defend him. “But do you think I could face my children otherwise? You know what’s going to happen as well as I do, Jack, and I hope and pray I can get Jem and Scout through it without bitterness, and most of all, without catching Maycomb’s usual disease” (Lee 188). I believe he is especially courageous when he stands outside Tom's cell, knowing others will try to kill him and then Atticus stands his ground. “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through know matter what’ (Lee 149). This is Atticus’…

In Maycomb everybody had a different opinion on how they felt about Atticus defending Tom. His friends told him that what he is doing is dumb and it is going against his morals. Atticus did not listen, he did not care what others had to say about him defending Robinson. (p. 135) Mrs. Dubose said “Your father is no better than the the niggers and trash he works for.” I think that Mrs. Dubose was trying to express that Atticus is going against what everyone else wants for Tom. Atticus is the only person that has been trying his hardest to help Robinson. Everyone else is the town is against it and wants to kill him. (p.218) “Yeah Atticus aims to defend him, that’s what I don’t like about it.” says Billy. I believe this was said because the people do not understand why Atticus would turn away from his friends and family and continue on with this case. They do not like the fact that he is helping a negro.…
