Imagine a young freshman at a party. A senior asks him if he wants a beer. He tells him that everyone is doing it and it will be fun. A courageous person may simply say no because he was taught well and knows his parents would be disappointed. He will follow his morals and not society’s. A coward would say yes because he is insecure and doesn’t stand up for himself. Calpurnia shows bravery when she does whatever she can, to save the town. According to the book, “We watched Calpurnia running toward the Radley Place, holding her skirt and apron above her knees” (Lee 124). This evidence shows courage because she risked her life in a time of fear. She could have been shot by Mr. Nathan or bit by the dog. These actions show courage because courage is the ability to conquer fears or being brave and that is what Calpurnia did. Moreover, Calpurnia is courageous because she goes against what is popular to do what is just. The text states, “Calpurnia sent me through the swinging door to the dining room with a stinging smack” (Lee 33). This evidence demonstrates her courage because during the 1930’s many people were prejudice and racist. Most parents or owners would whip their black servant if they ever smacked their child but Calpurnia goes against the social norm and smacks Scout because she wanted to teach her a lesson and did not care if she got in trouble. By doing what she thinks is right again, she proves she has courage because she shows bravery by risking being whipped or kicked out of the house just so she can teach Scout a lesson.
