Another character from To Kill A Mockingbird who shows courage is Mrs. Dubose. Mrs. Dubose is a grumpy neighbor of the Finch’s who forces Jem and Scout to read to her after Jem destroys her bushes. Later we find out that Mrs. Dubose was trying to wean off of morphine before she died and was using the kids as a distraction from the pain. In fact, that’s one of the ways Mrs. Dubose shows courage, she knew that the weaning process would be extremely painful and unpleasant and yet she was determined to go through with it and rid herself from the addiction. Another reason that this was courageous is because she knew that in the end she was going to die, she knew that she wasn’t helping herself live longer by breaking her addiction yet, she went…

Atticus demonstrates courage when he defends Tom Robinson even though he knew that they were going to lose the case simply because Tom was black. In the book to Kill a Mockingbird A man named Atticus defends a black man named Tom Robinson; Atticus is defending this man in court because he was accused of raping a white women even though he did not do it. Atticus talks to scout right before the trial when it starts surfacing at school and Atticus states “‘ This case Tom Robinson’s case, is something that goes to essence of a man's conscience- Scout I couldn't go to church and worship God if I did not try and help that man”’ (Lee pg.139). Atticus knew that if he did not help Tom then that would be on his conscience forever. Atticus knew that he would not be able to even live with himself if he did not at least try and help Tom because that was the right thing to do. Another case is when Atticus is talking to Link Deas when a group of men came to The Finches house to talk to Atticus, He says “ Link that boy might go to the chair but he’s not going until the truth is told” Atticus’s voice was even “ And you know what the truth is” (Lee pg 195). This shows that Atticus will make sure that the truth will be told no matter what it cost him because he wants the people to know the truth- that Tom did not actually rape that girl. Atticus is a man who will always do the right thing even if it is not going to benefit him because that is the kind of man he is, someone who would not stand for discrimination just because of their skin color.…

It is very evident at the beginning when Mrs. Dubose is dying from an illness. The kids think she is a very mean, old woman but Atticus thinks differently and tells the kids "Don't pay any attention to her, just hold your head high and be a gentleman"(135). Atticus understands what’s happening and knows what Mrs. Dubose is going through. She took morphine for a long time during her sickness to ease the pain. One day she went too far according to Jem. She had mentioned something about Atticus defending a person of color and Jem had enough. Later that day he went to her house and destroyed all of her flowers because he was outrageously mad. When Atticus found out what he had done, he made Jem go to Mrs. Dubose’s house and apologize for what he had done. When he was there she said that to serve his punishment he would have to go over there every day for a month and read to her because she was slowly stopping to take her morphine and needed something to help her pass time. By the end of Jem’s readings to her, she was completely off the morphine. Only a brave and courageous woman would be able to completely stop taking her medicine and live the rest of her life without anything making her feel…

In the book Mrs.Dubose was near the end of her time and wanted to break a drug addiction. She was addicted to morphine, a pain relieving drug with addictive properties, but at the cost of some mental and physical abilities. This may have be why Mrs.Dubose spent all her time in bed and a wheel chair. When she finally died Atticus explained to his children that “...real courage… It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.”(Lee, 112) Atticus said this because Mrs.Dubose showed real courage. She knew she was addicted to the drug, and could have easily taken it to satisfy her craving until she died, yet she didn’t. Even though it would cause her pain because she would no longer be able to relieve it with the drug, she continued and saw it to the end no matter the consequences. She did this so she could fulfill her final need. That need is “...to leave this world beholden to nothing and nobody.” (Lee, 111) She wanted nothing else other than to die free. She didn't want any debt or have to owe anyone. All of this was very courageous of her to stand up to this internal struggle of a drug addiction. She resisted the urges to take the drug and instead lived till her end in pain and chained to a bed and wheelchair. In the end she won because she saw it out till the very…
