To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a gothic novel about a little girl named Scout and her older brother Jem growing up in Alabama during the time of segregation. Throughout the story several characters display courage in different ways. Courage plays an important role in the story. Examples of courage are when Atticus accepts the Tom Robinson case, when Calpurnia takes Scout and Jem to a black church, and when Ms. Dubose makes a difficult decision regarding her last months of life.
Atticus’ decision to defend Tom Robinson shows a ton of courage. Since the story takes place during segregation, a white man defending a black man is frowned upon. Atticus still accepts the case even though he knows he will receive hate from the racist townspeople. Atticus represents Tom Robinson because his conscious makes him feel like it is the right thing to do. He also wants to set a good example for his children and teach them that all people deserve to be treated fairly.

Dubose lives her life in spite of her illness shows courage. Ms. Dubose is an older lady that is sick and close to death. She is mean and always sits on her porch making fun of Jem and Scout when they walk by. Due to her illness she has taken painkillers for many years. Ms. Dubose decides to stop taking the medicine so that she can be fully coherent. This courageous decision shows that she is willing to fight through intense pain to live the last months of her life. Atticus says, “She said she was going to leave this world beholden to nothing and nobody.”
