Lessons Of Courage In To Kill A Mockingbird

Lessons of Courage Life is full of courage. In a world full of hatred and racism, courage is the one thing that everybody needs, especially in Maycomb, Alabama. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, many events help certain characters stand out and leave the reader with a good picture of the many types of people in Maycomb. The main characters that will be included in almost every event are Atticus, Jem, and Scout. As a family, they will go through many obstacles and hopefully persevere. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus uses conflicts that his children face to teach them courage. The first time Atticus ever teaches the children courage is through Scouts trouble with other children at school. She was at the zenith point in her life when this had happened also. Scout is always known as a robust, masculine girl. She is basically a “Tomboy”. She is first told by Cecil Jacobs, that her father defends African Americans and implies that it is a very grievous thing. She thought to herself, “My fists were clenched and I was ready to let fly”(Lee 99). She ended up punching Cecil, which not only made Atticus mad, but allowed him a time to teach Scout about how she is not to fight anymore and that she needs to keep her head up. To Kill A Mockingbird has had many lessons in it, but the main one that Atticus had focused on was courage. He wanted his children from the very beginning to grow and learn the ways of courage. He was given many opportunities to teach them courage when Mrs. Dubose was mean, the kids at school were mean, and when the trial was a tough time for Jem and Scout.
