This novel depicts the epic resilience of the characters as they avoid the social pressures of racism and their controversial environment. In To KIll a Mockingbird,Harper Lee uses indirect characterization of courage in different characters while also linking heroism to the characters. Atticus’s heroic demeanor is complemented by his courageous actions and his courage to go with what his town disapproves of. For example,when Atticus was at the jailhouse for Tom Robinson,it was rumored that a mob was suppose to come after Tom and harm him,Atticus had stayed at the jailhouse to ensure that Tom would not get harmed before Tom would have a chance to begin the trial (201-204). For instance, Boo Radley saved Jem and Scout when they were under the tree in the pitch black and couldnt see anything, Jem and Scout were being attacked by Bob Ewell (351-362). Boo had implied how courageous he became because he saw the children who were in danger and he sought out to help them when they needed it the most,and by him risking the same danger the children were in by going under the large tree in the dark it emphazises that Boo was heroic enough to save the children from danger.Also,when Calpurnia took Jem and Scout to her church, Jem and Scout were given negative greeting from Lula.In response to Lula being negative Calpurnia had stood up for her children by telling Lula to stop when she was heading toward them(158). Calpurnia expressed her courage by becoming a carter 3 role model for Jem and Scout, and displays heroism by standing up to her neighbor,Lula, in church to defend the children. After all, Harper Lee demonstrates the overwhelming conflict between personal safety and conflict by showing the characters courage in the face of conflict and personal courage.
