In Maycomb everybody had a different opinion on how they felt about Atticus defending Tom. His friends told him that what he is doing is dumb and it is going against his morals. Atticus did not listen, he did not care what others had to say about him defending Robinson. (p. 135) Mrs. Dubose said “Your father is no better than the the niggers and trash he works for.” I think that Mrs. Dubose was trying to express that Atticus is going against what everyone else wants for Tom. Atticus is the only person that has been trying his hardest to help Robinson. Everyone else is the town is against it and wants to kill him. (p.218) “Yeah Atticus aims to defend him, that’s what I don’t like about it.” says Billy. I believe this was said because the people do not understand why Atticus would turn away from his friends and family and continue on with this case. They do not like the fact that he is helping a negro.
The definition of a hero is a person known for certain qualities and achievements. Atticus has possessed all of the following characteristics for being a hero: His willingness to defend a black man in court, his respect for everyone including Tom Robinson, and being strong no matter what anyone says about him defending a negro. Atticus Finch was a good man trying to be the best he could in difficult situations. He put his reputation on the line defending a black man and trying to save his life.
