During The Elizabethan Era there were three
major illnesses that caused countless deaths throughout the country such as Bubonic Plague, dysentery, and typhoid. Also there were many weird Forms and ways of curing sickness (“Elizabethan Medicine and Illnesses.” Elizabethan Entertainment, www.elizabethan-era.org.uk/elizabethan-medicine-and-illnesses.htm.) The Black Plague, also called the Black Death ravaged much of Medieval Europe during the 1350s. The disease killed approximately one-third of the entire population. That is one point five million people. (“The Black Death of 1348 to 1350.” History Learning Site, www.historylearningsite.co.uk/medieval-england/the-black-death-of-1348-to-1350/.) It is source is still largely a mystery. It is contagious nature forced many people to flee from infected areas, leaving no one to care for the sick or to bury the dead. Across Europe, the specter of death spread misery to all people both the noble and the poor.the Black Plague was a disaster during the 1300’s (By: McGill, Sara Ann; Black Plague, 8/1/2017, p. 1, 2p) Like most Towns or cities there were always illnesses and those illnesses such as these had a very deadly affect. Elizabethan medicine was extremely basic in an era when terrible illnesses like the Bubonic Plague (Black Death) were killing nearly one third of the population. Most Elizabethan physicians wore strange clothing, including a weird mask, that was enough to frighten anyone to death. But the Physician’s clothes probably saved their life and prevented them contracting the illnesses and diseases of their patients such as the plague and typhoid. The underlying cause of many of the Elizabethan illnesses was the lack of sanitation that was unreal and would be illegal in modern day, This factor was a problem especially in large towns or cities such as London. There were open sewers in the streets that were also filled with garbage. This was occasionally removed and waste was dumped into the nearest river. Diseases were easily spread in this unsanitary environment where fleas, lice and rats all flourished. There was no running water, and it was obtained from water pumps which was also a main factor of the spread of typhoid.(“Elizabethan Medicine and Illnesses.” Elizabethan Entertainment, www.elizabethan-era.org.uk/elizabethan-medicine-and-illnesses.htm.)
Elizabethan superstitions also related to special chants, omens and names and numbers. Many traditional English customs are based on the mythical relationship to superstitions dating back to the Dark Ages and even further back to the Romans and their Gods and Goddesses. Many superstitions during the Elizabethan period dated back to traditions and beliefs from much earlier times. The superstitions were also steeped in the belief in old magic and the mystical properties of animals and herbs.(Elizabethan Superstitions.” Elizabethan Entertainment, ww.elizabethan-era.org.uk/elizabethan-superstitions.htm)
