When it comes to Australian society, everyone perceives that there is this infinite amount of admiration that goes out to our nation's stardom and achievers. But this is honestly not the case. Even though we don’t like to admit it, Tall Poppy Syndrome has been ingrained in the average national personality ever since white British settlers arrived on the stolen land that we now call Australia.
From what we know so far about Australian nature and history, is that we were primarily settled by a number of small angry British penal colonies. And because of the settlement, we can only assume that there is a mass of today’s population that would have some form of great ancestors that relocated to this country as a British convict in the late 1700’s. The film is shown through the perspective of a young Australian woman who has experienced a lifetime of degradation as an outcast in society and her fantasy of getting married to prove to everyone she wasn’t a complete failure. And her dream comes true as she marries a good looking and well off Olympic swimmer. Although the marriage doesn’t go to plan, the Australian aspect of Tall Poppy Syndrome comes into the film as Muriel is walking down the aisle at her wedding and the looks of absolute distaste on the guests and bridesmaids faces. They looked as if stating that she is not worth this man, or should not be marrying someone of his socioeconomic status.
