There is a couple that has been dating for 10 years. Finally the man becomes the CEO of a major corporation, a dream he’s been waiting for, will he continue to date the girl or will he let the power go to his head and dump her? Will he lose all his respect for power? Power can be measured as the ability to control people. Some will use it for good, others for evil. Power is not given it is earned, rather it’s by: your strength, demanding it out fear, your race, or by working hard for it. Power is invisible, yet obvious. In John Steinbeck’s novella, Of Mice and Men, power is a hierarchy that’s inevitable. In other words, when power and respect is earned it makes for the “prince of the ranch” (Steinbeck 33).Slim has obtained respect by working. “He was a jerkline skinner… capable of driving ten, sixteen, even twenty mules with a single line to the leaders” (Steinbeck 33). He demanded power by screaming at people. “By Christ, he’s gotta talk when he’s spoke to. What the hell are you getting; into it for” (Steinbeck 25)? He screamed to inject fear into the other men. Because he is a boxer he tries to pick fights with anyone. “Come on ya big bastard. Get up on your feet. No big son-of-a-bitch is gonna laugh at me. I’ll show ya who’s yella” (Steinbeck 62). He picked this fight with Lennie because he felt like his power was in jeopardy. He did anything so his reputation wouldn’t be threaten. “I think you got your hand caught in the machine…But you jus’ tell an’ try to get this guy canned and we’ll tell ever’body, an’ then will you get the laugh” (Steinbeck 64).
