no matter how long it took. But before he could return she fell in love again with a rich man named Tom Buchanan who was well known for his sportsmanship. Daisy broke her promise and ended up breaking Gatsby’s heart before she even remembered him. Before he met Daisy though there was a man named Dan Cody that Gatsby had met when he was only 17 years old. The Cody was rich but he was a drinker which could have led to his death. Cody had influenced Gatsby and told him about all the rich people that he never knew about and what rich people have the power to do, due to the simple fact that they had money. Since Gatsby never really had money, he ended up liking the idea of being filthy rich and he now knew how to make it out of poverty. Daisy and Cody are two very important factors from Gatsby’s past that made him the person he was throughout the novel. His past was very influential because he learned a lot from the rich man Dan Cody and he realized he could get what he wanted if only he was rich, and he lost the love of his life Daisy who is now Buchanan due to her marriage. They are the very reason why Gatsby was rich and problem free as an adult. After the war Gatsby started the bootlegging business with alcohol due to prohibition, alcohol was banned and since the alcohol demand was extremely high, he was able to get rich in no time. Plus he had the GI Bill in favor due to his service for the country so he still had some aid from the government to give him a head start on what he wanted to accomplish. Though Gatsby made a big jump from being extremely poor to being extremely rich, money did not change his personality, he was still the same guy that you could have known from when he was little. Since the past is what the present is now, there are many changes that have to happen so that people can get somewhere in life. The past is what motivates us to become better, whether it taught you a good or bad lesson it is supposed to get us somewhere anyway. And for Gatsby, even though was past was kind of negative in a way, it motivated him immensely to get to where he was. He changed his entire social status and even though people misjudged him completely, he still remained the same humble person he always was. It is safe to say that the past does not always change the way you are but it does change what you allow it to. In conclusion, Gatsby had one goal and one goal only, which was to gain Daisy back into his life. He wanted to gain back the love of his life and have her forever, unfortunately he could not have that because she belonged to someone else. So in order to keep his hope going, he had the little green light to look at that was at Daisy’s place. That was his way of keeping hope to gaining Daisy back in his life. He had changed drastically for her, he wanted her to be with him because the past hurt him in a way that some people cannot recover from. Because of his past became the person he was, he became Jay Gatsby.
