There is one character that is initially tired, and that’s George Wilson, Myrtle’s husband. He’s such a lifeless man who owns a rundown auto shop in the Valley of Ashes, and that’s probably the reason Myrtle cheats on him. When describing George, Nick says, “He was a blonde, spiritless man, anaemic, and faintly handsome. When he saw us a damp gleam of hope sprang into his light blue eyes.” (page 25) This hints to the reader that he is a tired man. Even though he isn’t mentioned several times throughout, he is definitely a key character to how the story ends. Another character that can be categorized as tired, is Nick. Although it’s not clearly mentioned in the novel, readers can conclude that in the end Nick is exhausted from what he has gone through with this group of people. Nick says to Gatsby, “They’re a rotten crowed, you’re worth the whole damn bunch put together.” (page 154) It was the only compliment that he gave Gatsby, but it shows just how tiring they were to be around because they were so perfidious. Because Nick was always asked to join in on things, he always knew the truth about all of the other characters. He knew who the Mistress was, he knew Gatsby’s true past, and he knew who really killed Myrtle, but didn’t do anything about it.
