Topical agents are helpful when treating skin conditions that are localized in small areas, or involves superficial skin involvement. It is also helpful in treating small or mild cases of infections, and skin irritation for example, impetigo, acne, eczema, or even sunburn. Topical agents are helpful, because it causes minimal side effects with proper use of the medication instructions. On the contrary, topical agents may not be strong enough to treat deeper or severe skin conditions or it may not be possible to use due to the tissue involved for instance, the inside of the mouth for some medications.
