Imagine if everything you have been told from the people you trust are all lies? They have to constantly wonder if what they are being told are truths leads to confusion. This is something that frequently happens in the book Delirium by Lauren Oliver. No matter how hard people try to hide the truth, it will always be exposed. The truth about the society’s history will in the end be uncovered. Magdalena Haloway is struck with disbelief about the lies that have been told in her history classes, “Being here, seeing this, it’s nothing like what I was taught in my history classes” (287). The bombed road in the Wilds is one of the many examples of the government’s fabrication. The road in the Wilds that is destroyed
by the society is described as, “…smiling pilots giving the thumbs-up, people cheering at the borders because we were at last safe, houses incinerated neatly with no mess…” (287). This scene explained by Lena’s history teachers is the complete opposite of what actually happened at the time; the place is a total disaster while people are murdered, and blood splattered all over the place. Moreover, all the deceit the government has been spreading and his hatred towards the Invalids may have been because of an experience in the past. He may have loved someone, but has been rejected and could not stand seeing people happy with their love life that the government has banned love and planted fear of the Wilds. Because of this reason, one of his way to manipulate his people easily is to fake about the past of Portland. As a result, even though the Portland government has went to the extent of lying about the history between the Invalids and the Portlanders shows nothing can ever be hidden in the shade forever. Furthermore, the lies said about the mother of Lena have been revealed, despite the many years it has been concealed. Lena is in utter shock after hearing the truth, from Alex, behind the death of her mother, “I think your mother is alive” (337). All her life she has been told her mother is dead, that she has committed suicide. This has been haunting Lena for many years. Additionally, the society has hidden the facts about Lena’s mother because she has run away into the Wilds. The government is very protective about his reputation. In addition, he controls the citizens with fear of the unknown, so with lies it would be easier to control his people. The mother dying because of the symptoms of love would plant a larger fear in the citizens, showing them how dangerous love is. This is way more effective than breaking the news of her escaping to the Wilds. For that reason, the fabrication of Lena’s mother that has been hidden for many years has now been uncovered. Therefore, despite how well the lies buried the truths, it will always be exposed. The deceit history the government has told all the adults and children, Lena found out through Alex that it is entirely opposite of what really happened. Moreover, the mother everyone has thought was dead was revealed to actually be alive in the Wilds. Does this not make you question everything you have ever learnt?
