The simple colors and lighting of the visual provide a better argument for the following reasons: the bold red text draws the viewer’s attention, the realistic lighting and monotonous color scheme ensures the viewer of the reality of the subject, and the bold black text against the girls’ draws in the audience as the location of the words would normally be hidden under their clothes.
The red text draws attention as it contrasts the black and white background, forcing the audience to read the message “stop bullying”. At the same time the viewer can interpret the realism of the photo as a symbol of how bullying is a very real problem that most people face while in their youth. Lastly it can be determined that the bold black text t highlighted against the light skin is symbolic of the flaws each girl in the photo has normally kept hidden under their clothes, eliciting a more emotional response from the
audience. The pathos, or emotional argument, given from the visual promotes the idea that the majority of the population has witnessed bullying of some form at some point in their lives and therefore will cause the viewer to become sympathetic to the girls in the photo, bravely displaying their flaws and insecurities. Sadly as a result of bullying becoming more commonplace in today’s society, it has also become a more relatable topic for viewers who come across the visual; the relation a viewer may have to bullying, being the bully, victim, or bystander, that person will become sympathetic to a situation involved with bullying. Given that the viewer might make personal connections with the visual, they may or may not agree with argument as they delve into the logic behind said argument. Logic becomes important in relation to the visual in proving whether the argument makes a true or false statement that appeals to the audience. The logic behind the argument that bullying can be stopped, if everyone were to play their part is fairly simplistic- the math doesn’t add up- one person can’t stop every single bully on the planet and it must become our duty and responsibility if we come across bullying, to put an end to it. As the old saying goes “strength in numbers” truly applies to topic as people generally feel more confident in a group where they’re reassured that they will not become a victim once again. The comfort provided from a group effort gives the victim or bystander the courage to stand against the bully and come to accept what harmful words may have been said about themselves.
Overall, the visual provides an argument that encourages viewers to stand up against bullying because of how harmful and dangerous it has become in today’s society as well as how difficult it has become to abolish it from one single person’s actions towards a bully.
