Golf may seem straightforward but it’s not, there are 34 clear-cut rules. The rules can be as simple as a player may have a maximum of 14 clubs in their bag, but they can be as complex, as where if a ball struck by you is deflected or stopped by someone else - play your ball as it lies without penalty, except (a) in match play, if an opponent or his caddie deflects the ball you have an option to replay the stroke or (b) in stroke play, if the ball is deflected after a stroke from on the putting green, you must replay it. are trying to simplify the rules. According to the New York Times article, Golf Unveils New, Simplified Rules, “Golf’s two governing bodies released a draft of new rules aimed at bringing common sense to what can be a complicated sport. The proposal reduces the number of rules from 34 to 24.” Golf is a complicated sport and now that they want to reduce the severity and number of the rules, which is saying a lot considering there will still be 24 rules.
Golf isn’t just a sport about mental toughness, it’s also physically demanding.
A golfer who walks an 18 hole round can walk up to 8 miles which are approximately 18,000 steps, you can burn around 2,000 calories. According to the Golf & Health Project, “Golf can help increase your longevity by 5 years, it can help you have a healthier body because it provides physical intensive activities, it can also help decrease the risk of more than 40 chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, and cancer. Golf can help increase wellness benefits because it is shown to increase self-esteem, confidence, and self-worth.”
I understand if you tell me that golf can’t be a sport because it doesn’t match the definition of a sport, a player has to be able to physically stop a person from completing a task, but most video games follow this definition. How can you say that is a sport but golf isn’t? If you look into how most people define a sport, by the physical benefits, then golf should be a
sport.
