Most tests just try to measure basic academic skills, they rely mostly on multiple-choice questions, some adding a few short written questions they rarely require students to apply their learning or engage in higher level thinking. A lot of jobs in today’s economy require you to be good at multitasking, being social, being able to analyze and apply information and work well with others none of which are measured by multiple choice exams that schools require.
Exit exams should not be necessary because $130 million is spent annually administering, training the teachers on how to teach the students for the exit exams, scoring the test and providing remediation for students who have failed one or both sections. This amount of money would be justified if it were shown that the exit exams improve overall academics, college and real world readiness, not one study has shown that it increases student’s preparedness for any of those things.
