The first goal identified was to own and power the best travel brands in the world. To this goal we will first apply a strategic plan. The operational plan would consist of first organizing and identifying the work steps needed to bring this plan to fruition. The first step would be to determine where the company currently is in regards to its strengths and weaknesses. In this case Expedia is strong in the area of already offering a broad range of service and travel offerings and it is also strong in the area of having a very large and diverse portfolio of travel brands. This would establish that Expedia would need to further acquire travel companies/agencies or partner with other competing travel agencies to continue to grow to become the world’s largest offering of travel services.…

Following the Deregulation in 1978, a competitive price war ensued among the airline industry as a direct result of the new freedom for airlines to set their own fares as well as route entry and exits. This gave rise to the operating structure of the airlines as it exists today, consisting of the point-to-point system and the hub and spoke system. With this came the change of focus for major airlines to non-stop, cross-country routes in densely populated cities, which, in a regulated environment, would be profitable. This resulted in the obvious outcome of increased competition, thus lowering the average industry prices for non-stop cross country routes which were profitable. This caused operating costs to increase, narrowing the profit margins. During the mid 80 's, acquisition led to eight airlines capturing a disproportionate share of domestic traffic. Due to a recession and increasing fuel prices in the 90 's, bankruptcy and collapse were common to many carriers. As a direct result, new airlines were formed, and now position themselves as low fare, no frill airlines.…

TripAdvisor was founded in February 2000 by Stephen Kaufer, Langley Steinert, and several others. Stephen Kaufer says the original idea wasn't a user generated social media site to swap reviews. " We started as a site where we were focused more on those official words from guidebooks or newspapers or magazines. We also had a button in the very beginning that said visitors add your own review and boy did that just take off. Pretty soon the number of average consumer reviews far surpassed the number of "professional reviews". That is when the site really turned into this collection of what the normal traveller was saying whererever they were going. "[6] Original financing was obtained from Flagship Ventures, the Bollard Group and private investors.[7] The company was purchased by IAC/InterActiveCorp in 2004. IAC spun off its travel group of businesses under the Expedia, Inc. name in August 2005.[8]…

After enjoying much initial success by utilizing the internet and a patented technology which connected buyers to sellers, priceline began to suffer growing pains early on. Initially priceline was successful because it concentrated solely on airline seats. Airlines were more than happy to fill empty seats for any price rather than fly with an undersold plane. Copying its success, priceline quickly followed into offering hotel rooms, another commodity in which hotels would rather book a room at a minimal price than have it empty. As priceline spread out to encompass more areas such as home mortgages and groceries, it faced a diluted image to shoppers. Some ventures were huge resource drains to the company both financially and in talent. As employees tried fixing what was wrong with problem areas, profitable areas such as hotels and airfare began to receive direct competition from the airlines and hotels themselves as well as other websites such as expedia.com.…
