Explain and Illustrate features a Tolerant Individual may be said to
Require
Tolerance involves not acting on one’s disaproval of a practice or value that one opposes. This defintion would suggest that a mysoginistic individual who does not believe in femal suffrage is being toletant. The mysoginist may have arguments against that female right eg. being the maternal sex, their role is as a houswife therefore, political decisions do not concern them. So the individual disaproves of female equality - to not have the vote would place the sex as inferior. In the 21st century we would not consider the individual tolerant, even if he did not act upon his belief. A Tolerant person must possess specifit feaures in order to define themselves as tolerant rather than the decision. To be tolerant, the person must disagree with the opinion or behaviour, you cant tolerate something you approve. In the same way, the issue in question must matter to you as otherwise you would be indifferent. The mysoginsit would be indifferent redarding what housework a female did but would have an opinion of the political status they could be allowed in society because it is of subsantial importance to him. In order to be tolerant the individuals view must also be responsible. They should make a valuable judgement which on reflection does not change, even after attmpting to justify and understand anothers view. It would often be the case that this minority or irrational view is ininformed and irresponsible, therefore they wouldnt be considered tolerant. However, this would alow a thoughtful sexist, who has carefully pondered female suffrage, but remains opposed to it on religious grounds, count as tolerant. The individual may look to the Bible when considering the right version of the ‘good life’ and see the srory of Adam and
Eve as an indication of male superiority - as Eve is percieved weaker than
Adam. We may still see the person as sexist
