Does interpersonal contact improve relations among groups that are in conflict?
Introduction:
University of Cape Town wants to enforce Integration of students from different “ races” through the use of the “contact hypothesis” which has an underlying idea that interpersonal contact can effectively reduce prejudice between groups like these(Allport, 1954). This paper argues that while it has been proven that interpersonal contact can improve relations among groups in conflicts through the reduction of prejudice it is of outmost significance to acknowledge the fact that in the South African Context this cannot necessarily amount to grater racial integration. Doing this allowed a the paper to discover themes and issues which connected the sources together((Terre Blanche, Durrheim & Painter, 2006). Firstly it was important to identify the key concepts in the research question in order to refine the search in this paper the main concepts were prejudice, interpersonal contact and contact hypothesis. The above concepts were used to form an intersection set of literature which was developed by identifying literature that discussed all the concepts(Blanche, Durrheim & Painter,2006). Moreover the effect of the hypothesis contact has been proven to indeed reduce interpersonal conflict, with the highly convincing evidence compiled by Pettigrew and Tropp( 2008).
Research evidence of the impact of interpersonal contact:
Their “meta-analysis of 515 studies ( including 713 independent samples) , based on a total of over 250000 participants found a highly significant negative relationship between contact and prejudice( mean effect size r=-22,p<.001)”( Pettigrew& Tropp,2008, p.1), meaning that more interpersonal contact decrease intergroup conflicts and prejudice. However the paper cannot necessarily infer causal influences from these findings .

Though there are many people who have overcome the prejudice from history, prejudice and discrimination still exist today. Vincent N. Parrillo wrote an essay, “Causes of Prejudice”, provided the origin and many causes of prejudice and looked at prejudice from a psychological and sociological stand points.     Four studies investigate the role that stereotype threat plays in producing racial distancing behavior in an anticipated conversation paradigm. It was hypothesized that the threat of appearing racist may have the ironic effect of causing Whites to distance themselves from Black conversation partners. In Study 1, participants distanced themselves more from Black partners under conditions of threat, and this distance correlated with the activation of a “White racist” stereotype. In Study 2, it was demonstrated that Whites’ interracial distancing behavior was not predicted by explicit or implicit prejudice. Study 3 provides evidence that conceiving of interracial interactions as opportunities to learn may attenuate the negative consequences of threat for Whites. Study 4 found that Whites have conscious access to their experience of stereotype threat and that this awareness may mediate the relationship between threat and distance. These results are discussed within a broader discourse of racial distancing and the possibility that certain identity threats may be as important as prejudice in determining the outcomes of interracial interactions.     In study 1, the effect of extraversion on outgroup attitude operated via an increase in cross‐group friendship, whereas openness to experience and agreeableness had a direct effect on outgroup attitude. In study 2, we included intergroup anxiety as a mediator explaining these relationships, and we ruled out ingroup friendship as a potential confound. We found that the relationships between openness to experience and agreeableness on the one hand and outgroup attitude on the other were mediated by reduced intergroup anxiety. In addition, the effect of extraversion on outgroup attitude operated via an increase in cross‐group friendship that was in turn associated with lower levels of intergroup anxiety. Across both studies, the friendship–attitude relationship was stronger among those low in agreeableness and extraversion. We discuss the importance of integrating personality and situational approaches to prejudice reduction in optimizing the impact of contact‐based interventions.
