Social determinants of health are “the circumstances in which people are born, grow up, live, work and age, and the systems put in place to deal with illnesses”.
Food/nutrition therefore relates to the social determinates of health due to the fact that it has an effect on the circumstances in which one is born, as well as having effects on the circumstances in which one lives, works, and ages. And ultimately nutrition does indeed play a major role in dealing with illnesses.

Bringing together and relating these terms, one realizes that although food may be available in markets, it however does not necessarily continue to be available in all households and thus only caters for specific households. Markets with food may be a long distance away from certain households in poorer communities whom have no means of transport to getting to these markets. Thus the food provided by these markets are not accessible to certain households which may then experience food insecurity as a result.
Also one needs to consider the definition and meaning of household food security too. Household food security entails that there is always sufficient food available in the house and that this food is nutritionally satisfactory and safe for human consumption. This food also needs to supply every member of the family/ household; to sum up it means that there is always enough nutritious food to eat for every member of the family in a household.
