As a learning assistant you may provide support in a variety of forms, including; practical, informative, professional and emotional. As with children, it is important to adapt communication to meet the different communication needs of adults. You should adapt how you speak to recognise the other person’s needs and requirements. For example, if they have a hearing impairment you must face them and speak slowly whilst enunciating clearly. If they speak English as an additional language you may require some assistance with translation. The use of effective communication can prevent misunderstandings and disagreements. These occur for a variety of reasons, for example: * poor communication * opposing expectations * different values and ideas * external factors * lack of confidence (a child may not have the confidence to say that they do not understand, so may act out or cause an argument to detract from this)
However if a disagreement does occur, to manage and resolve it effectively you must: * show sensitivity * keep calm * try to resolve the situation as soon as possible * not unnecessarily delay responses
