Explain The Causes Of One Type Of Extreme Weather
Explain the causes of one type of extreme weather.
Temperate storm Boscastle flood 2004
A Temperate storm are storms of different types and occurs in the area of 30 to 60 degrees latitude with High Wind speed (39-55 mph + or 63–90 km/h). In 2004 various factors lead to the flooding of Boscastle. Boscastle is a rural village located on the North coast of Cornwall, in the South West of England. There are various physical factors which contributed to the flooding of Boscastle. Firstly, the storm which caused the flood was caused by the remnants of a hurricane in the Atlantic. This would cause a hurricane because the storm would be foundation is already there for a storm to occur and would require less energy to form. This in my view however was not the prevailing factor which caused the flood. The depression moved in from the East Atlantic bringing gallons of water. This is quite a big factor in comparison to the other reason as this reason acted as the catalyst for all the other causes.
The next major factor was the weather that day – arguably the most major factor. The entire South-West of the country had been exposed to stormy weather over the days leading up to the flood on the 16 th of August, and as a result the ground was saturated . The combination of high localised temperatures & the a lot of unabsorbed surface water, coupled with humid winds off the sea & the effects of the local relief (Bodmin Moor) caused a great deal of moist, warm air to travel upwards quickly. By early afternoon, the rain had started, and within a few hours a massive 5 inches of rain had fallen in Boscastle alone. When the flow in the valley was met by the water funnelled down from the moors through the steep valley (unhindered by soil absorption due to the saturation of the land and the fact that the rocks were impermeable.), the sheer volume of water in such a small space at once caused the Valency to burst its banks & cause the exceptional level of damage in the village.
