The role the government has in addressing the health inequalities is to supply free costs and funding to limit the high costs of health, education, and other needs. The government can also assist the low SES by providing public housing, pension and concession cards and services such as Centrelink and Medicare. These resources improve to relieve the stress on the socioeconomic disadvantage by assisting and supporting their needs by providing free or limited costs of treatment for a range of health facilities and services such as public health services, hospitals, primary care and community health care, and specialised health services. Allocating resources for groups in need equally and fairly is also vital. Other ways to improve health inequalities is by developing finance programs to close gaps in education and life skills. Strengthening public finance on the social determinants of health and ensuring the basic services are essential for health.
Study author Silvia Stringhini said the research showed health policies should target low socioeconomic groups if early mortality was to be avoided.
"Given the huge impact of socioeconomic status on health, it's vital that governments accept it as a major risk factor and stop excluding it from health policy," Stringhini said.
