Endodontic is part of the dentistry that focused on treating infected pulp in order to save tooth from extraction. There are several techniques to save the tooth, and its depends on following, which technique will be used:
- the patient age and fact if the tooth is adult or deciduous
- severity disease
- patient wishes
The techniques used in endodontic are:
Pulp capping
1) Give an explanation of pulp capping and explain the purpose of the treatment
Pulp capping is less common and less invasive than the pulpectomy. There is no long recovery or sensitivity like with root canal treatment or need for crown, because the pulp stays vital.

Some dentists call this procedure baby tooth root canal as the procedure is mainly perform on deciduous teeth. This is only possible if the infection is in the coronal part of tooth. It cannot be performed if there is abscess present at the apex or tooth is mobile.
2) List all the equipment, instruments, materials and medicaments that are needed for this treatment and describe the purpose of each item
- Dentist- nurse PPE (gloves, glasses or visors, masks, uniform)- worn to protect eyes, respiration system and prevent cross-infection and clothes contamination
- Patient PPE (glasses kids size, bib)- worn to protect eyes and clothes from contamination
- Patient’s records- charts, x-rays, letters from GP or specialist or consent form- paper or digital
- Mouthwash and tissues- for rinsing after procedure
- Local anaesthetic (long or short needle, LA cartridge, syringe, topical anaesthetic)- to prevent pain during procedure
- Rubber dam (sheet, frame, clamp, punch, clamp forceps)- to isolate the operative site- for protection from chemicals - used only if the child is older and cooperative
- Cotton wool rolls, cotton wool balls, 3 in 1 tip, suction tip- for moisture
