There are two kinds of motivation which are extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is more effective than extrinsic motivation. As Simon A (2010) states, the prefect method of motivation are intrinsic interests and satisfactions. It is because intrinsically motivated individuals are more able to develop high regards for learning without the existence of any reinforcements. In the case I mentioned, at the beginning, it was an extrinsic motivation. I did not like Chinese. I wanted to answer questions because I desired to get stickers and gifts. At the end, I found that I enjoyed having Chinese lesson. I wanted to engage in lesson and answer questions even without stickers. Lesson participation became my own reward. It was an intrinsic motivation. I was intrinsically motivated to participate in the lessons. The interest towards Chinese was building …show more content…
An successful teaching outcome cannot only rely on one method to teaching. An effective teaching consists many different methods. There is no the best way to teach, only is the most suitable way to teach. Refering to the case I mentioned, my Chinese teacher used both operant conditioning, extrinsic and intrinsic motivations and incentive approach to improve students’ motivation in learning. The external reinforcement acted as a catalyst to initiate students’ interest in learning. After students got the goal successfully, they became more and more enjoy in learning. They want to learn because they are interested in. So, the extrinsic motivation became intrinsic motivation. It has been proposed by Wigfield (1997) “Instructors are encouraged to help students understand the value and importance of learning for themselves, but not frequently craving for external rewards and reinforcements. This is highly recommended in terms of setting intrinsic goals rather than using extrinsic motivation” (as cited in Simon A,
