Explain Why Is It Important To The Community
important to you? Why is it important to the community?
There are many aspects of parks, recreation and leisure that interest me. I am particularly interested in the conservation and continued expansion of our park system. The rich cultural history and natural beauty the parks provide are vital to our country. Growing up in the rural south, where resources were often scarce, my family depended on local, state and national parks for a great deal of our leisure and recreation. We spent many summers exploring, camping and canoeing the parks in our surrounding areas. This time spent in those protected spaces allowed me to see the world from a new perspective, realizing it was much larger than the dirt road where I grew up.

Paul S. Sutter’s book Driven Wild describes the formation of the Wilderness Society and how a group of eight individuals became activists in their attempt to preserve the Nation’s wilderness. These individuals were authors, scientists, ecologists, conservationist, environmentalist, and foresters who wanted preserve the remaining natural wilderness from logging, mining, and tourism. Their main points of contention focuses more on tourism resulting from the growing availability of automobiles causing the increased need for roads, the “federal government increasingly willing to fund recreational development on the nation’s public lands,” and the growing consumerism as tourist visiting the national parks.…

National Parks. Beautiful and grand these parks have been protecting nature for many years, but it was not until I watched a video at the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo that I realized the work that went into preserving them and who was involved, that was when I thought of my topic, John Muir and Theodore Roosevelt, working together to preserve nature. John Muir and Theodore Roosevelt interested me because of how influential they were in establishing national parks. I asked myself questions such as why did John Muir fight for preserving nature, and who did he work with to get national parks established, to guide my research.…

Few places can match the sheer diversity of wildlife and culture that exists in the country’s national park system. Humans, with the future in mind, have “set aside” these beautiful sites of wonder and awe. But at what cost? Do national parks end up being good and bad at the same time?…

I will focus on research conducted about current barriers to recreation since historical information was discussed previously. Erickson, Johnson, and Kivel (2009) found that economic factors that were the result of workplace discrimination, had an effect on the access the African-American population has to national parks. Additionally, they discussed how fear from historical as well as current racism was identified as a barrier to park use (Erickson, Johnson, & Kivel, 2009). Mason and Koehli discuss the socioeconomic barriers faced by much of the First Nations population which impedes ability to access recreation facilities and opportunities (2012). They also discuss the lack of suitable facilities and programs provided on reserves, this is disproportionate to the amount of programs that can be found in other areas of Canada (Mason & Koehli,…

Multiple benefits come from a road trip with family and friends to go on a nature hike or simply experience the outdoors. National parks hold the beauty that has not been touched or destroyed by humans; thus, it is a safe place for a multitude of different species and plants. However, the opportunities to visit these natural wonders could decrease due to budget cuts that threaten preservation and maintenance. The budget cuts can affect the national parks in ways such as less staff, reduced maintenance operations, as well as other problems that will be expanded upon shortly. The government is decreasing the amount of federal funding needed for the protection of our national parks when visitation rates have been higher than ever. Decreased income to our National Parks affect these tourist sites; therefore, budget cuts should not be implemented.…

Detachment describes the way a child reacts to their attachment figure after being separated from her for a time period and then meets her again. Children who had been separated from their attachment figure for days or weeks, when reunited with their attachment figure showed detachment behaviors. Detachment behaviors are: no recognition of the attachment figure; turning away and/or walking away from the attachment figure; crying or coming close to crying; and an expressionless face. Furthermore, “There is reason to believe that after a very prolonged or repeated separation during the first three years of life detachment can persist indefinitely” (p. 12). From the above information we learn that separation is dangerous; it has lifelong effects and should be avoided if possible.…
