There has been an increase in depression over the last few years. Since 1980,6.9million people reportedly have been diagnosed with depression. Depression is continually growing in the US.There are 3 leading causes of depression school, work, and personal relationships. Some people believe that school is a leading cause of depression because students tend to be overloaded with school work. The state standards have increased their expectations for students, causing them to have more school work. These increased standards cause more stress on the student to perform and meet their expectations. Students have five core classes that have a good amount of homework. At home these
students might not be able to ask questions about the work, causing unnecessary stress.
Students that have jobs often are pressed for time causing unnecessary stress. Also, working students try to pull all nighters and are exhausted. These tired students tend to stress more, causing depression. They also might feel alone on having to juggle both a job and school work. Sometimes these students might be in an irritable mood, causing them to lash out on peers.
Lastly, personal relationships cause stress. I personally connect with this one. Sometimes people might get depressed after not being able to see someone they care about. I tend to get in a bad mood if I have to go a long period of time without seeing my best friend. For example, army wives tend to go into a deep depression, after not seeing their husbands for a long period of time.
In conclusion, school, work, and personal relationships cause stress. Overall stress causes depression. School, work, and personal relationships are a few reasons why there is more stress in the United States.
