Many people have lost a loved one or have been through something that was heart breaking. In addition, calamities and historic events can also cause depression. “Studies show that depression goes up after traumatic events such as the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the Oklahoma City bombing, and Hurricane Katrina” (How Trauma Leads to Depression). These events left numerous individuals hearts broken and this trauma remained with them. Some people are scarred for life and others are left with horrible situations embedded in their brains. Professor Peter Kinderman who led a research stated, “Whilst we know that a person's genetics and life circumstances contribute to mental health problems, the results showed that traumatic life events are the main reason people suffer from anxiety and depression” (Science Daily). Many people go through agonizing events, but it depends on the way that people choose to overcome them. Several people stay strong and accept reality and others are not able to overcome such an event resulting in, depression. Many people suffer from depression and the cause is their past. Multiple individuals suffer from abuse from family and enemies. Individuals are abused and over the years of all the abuse that they were not able to overcome becomes depression. However, numerous people experience abuse, but, because of the environment they live in later on in life, few people do not develop depression. “In almost every case of significant adult depression, some form of abuse was experienced in childhood, either physical, sexual, emotional or, often, a combination” (Child Abuse and Depression). A lot of the abuse that was experienced in an individual's childhood remains with them, as oppose to abuse as an adult multiple adults are able to overcome it, since they are more mature and can handle the situation. A Fergusson study in 2008 found that childhood physical abuse resulted in major depression (Adolescents and Young Adults). Also seen in this study, childhood abuse really impacts the child for future.
