Wal-Mart does not benefit the American economy. It is a privately owned business that was established in 1962 by Mr. Sam Walton in Bentonville, Arkansas. Walton opened Wal-Mart as a one-stop shop providing services at unbeatably low prices. Wal-Mart has opened many stores, and its development dominating most parts of the American society. Arguments have been raised on the implications of these low prices to the U.S economy and its communities. Film maker Robert Greenwald highlights the impacts of Wal-Mart on small American societies in the film, "Wal-Mart: The high cost of low price." Greenwald has covered different aspects of Wal-Mart in the film like increasing government spending, eliminating small business and abuse of workers. According to Greenwald, overreliance on Wal-Mart has negatively impacted the American economy and society, both locally and internationally.…
Industrial regulation is government imposed regulation of an entire industry in order to monitor prices and products provided to the public. Industrial regulation exists to avoid overpricing, lack of competition and the overall taking advantage of consumers. The intended impact on the markets is to promote competition and economic efficiency. Industrial regulation also intends that monopolies and oligopolies do not control the entire market, charging high prices and providing fewer and inferior products, which in turn “harms consumers and society” (McConnell, Brue, Flynn & et al, 2011, pg. 382). These regulations reduce the market power of monopolies, therefore allowing entry into the market by the competition which then allows for substitute products and price competition. It also reduces the power of oligopolies and increases market competition and prevents collusion. The antitrust laws also help anti competition and price fixing by not allowing monopolies to develop.…
When you hear the words low prices it is hard not to think of Wal-Mart. The company that revolutionized discount shopping. But what happens behind the scenes? How is it that the world’s largest retail chain can offer so many deals? In the last 20 years the anti-Walmart campaign seems to continuously be on the minds of many. Sebastian Mallaby and Karen Olsson share radically different views on the ethics of the Wal-Mart Corporation. In “Up Against Wal-Mart” we are forced to believe that Wal mart is a vicious company that shows no remorse when firing employees and cutting their benefits. The author produces factual information and eyewitness accounts pointing to these horrible deeds that the large corporation run by money hungry businessmen have cheated many employees out of proper wages, proper benefits and even their jobs. While Sebastian Mallaby depicts Wal-Mart like the average American company. In his article “Progressive Wal-Mart. Really.” He states that while Wal-Mart is responsible for many questionable deeds, they are merely doing what they have to in order to survive.…
Megan McArdle, the author of Walmart's Wage Experiment Works... for Workers, compares wage increases with different workforces at Walmart stores. McArdle provides the reader with ideas and questions like, "What happens if different stores did this?" and other questions relating to the effort needed to continue production if Walmart increased or the number of employees needed to fill the new workplaces. Claims like, "Paying higher wages has allowed Walmart to attract better workers, resulting in cleaner, nicer stores." Throughout the article, McArdle compares Costco's way of work with Walmart's and concludes that people living/working in rural(ish) areas generally make less money and have less workers, so "up"ing the wages would help those less…
Wal-Mart is a nationwide company and is a household term almost everyone knows. Some people find it as a store that tends to help the less wealthy, while others find it to be the complete opposite in aiding underprivileged families. These details might be over looked when not observed closely, preventing people from truly appreciating what Wal-Mart is doing for our society. In the beginning there was no intention for the government to have a hand in business. The government wanted businesses to act on their own best interests without any involvement from the government. Regulation was brought about to enhance the public and take care of those that have lost or investigate those who have cheated. For many years there was no government regulation and as time progressed the need for it became apparent. Regulation has a lot of costs and a lot of benefits. The government likes to keep them efficient by making sure the benefits of them outweigh the cost. It isn’t cheap to have these regulations in place but it is what is needed to make sure that companies are doing the right things. The following are roles of government: protecting business property and enforcing business contracts, setting and collecting taxes. The government would provide fire, police and military protection under protecting business property. The government would issues trademarks to businesses to protect their products, copyrights to artists and writers to protect creations, and patents to inventors to give them control of their inventions. Within the soft drink industry government regulation is much needed due to the fact that child obesity is on the rise. The role of government in business has changed and evolved since the country was born. The government is involved in business to provide public goods; to protect public health and welfare; to stabilize the economy; to protect businesses, consumers, investors, and competition; to conserve the environment; to regulate working conditions; and to protect business property. Both state and federal laws govern mergers and acquisitions. State laws set the procedures for the approval of mergers and establish judicial oversight for the terms of mergers to ensure shareholders of the targeted company receive…

As a customer, I think that Wal-Mart is bad for the America, because the Wal-Mart company hurts the local communities. Most people know that when Wal-Mart comes to town, the company outsources small businesses and shops. Wal-Mart does not rely affect small businesses, but it is a competition to other big department store. For example, in the film, “Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price,” the documentary discusses that Wal-Mart is the largest company in America and it can put out other businesses like Target, Sears, or any other businesses. For these reasons, many business owners are worried that they may lose businesses because of Wal-Mart.…
Despite what Lindsey said, I believe that Wal-Mart is contributing to the damage of this economy. By making the prices so low, Wal-Mart has to lower the salaries of its workers to make a profit. The employee has to work more hours for less money. That’s why I believe that Wal-Mart is not good for America.…

In a world where most retailers are categorized as having a monopolistic competition market structure, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. appears to have an oligopoly market structure. Nevertheless, because there are far too many retailers to deal with, then they also have a monopolistic competition market structure. Regardless, Wal-Mart would rather have it this way because it has not hurt them at all by having competition.…
