Explore the Relationship Between George and Lennie
Explore the relationship between George and Lennie

During the 1930s, millions of dollars were wiped out in an event that became known as the Wall Street Crash. It led to the Depression in America which crippled the country from 1930 - 1936. People lost their life savings when firms and banks went bust, and 12 - 15 million men and women - one third of America's population - were unemployed.

In the novella Of Mice and Man, by John Steinback, the main of quite George and Lennie are very good friends. In fact they have been friends for a long time. George always takes care of Lennie and tries to protect him, while Lennie obeys him and looks up to him. "Me an Lennie gonna' roll up a stake" This shows that it is George shows it is his intention to spend the rest of his life with his pal Lennie.

“Because I got you to look after me and you got me to look after you…”For Lennie, George is clearly the most important person in his life. He is his friend, his guardian and his only family. Whenever he does anything wrong, he would always think it as making George angry. He is very afraid of George’s disapproval. He has absolute faith in George, Lennie believes that George will always be there for him, and always give him the best possible.

Furthermore, when he killed Curley’s wife, he said, “I shouldn’t of did that. George’ll be mad.” This shows that everything for him is “George related”. It’s never about whether something is right or wrong; it’s about weather or not George approves of something, he would probably do it.

George, although he is devoted to Lennie, sometimes thinks of Lennie as a major source of trouble. Throughout the story, He has become angry because of the trouble that Lennie has unintentionally caused. For example, when he saw a women with soft smooth red dress in Weed, and he couldn’t help himself and touched the dress. The woman thought this was inappropriate and cried for help. Soon a lot of men with knives were chasing George and Lennie.

“Well look Lennie- if you jus’ happen to get in trouble like you’ve always done before, I want you to come right back here and hide in the brush. Can you remember that” George told Lennie. “I sure can George.” Lennie said back to George. Throughout the novel George and Lennie's relationship is put on display as George a role model to Lennie and Lennie is incredibly loyal to George. Lennie looked up to George consequently wanted to be just like George. If we did not have the relationship of George and Lennie shared with us in Of Mice to Men it would be a bland book with a poorly displayed plot. I always wanted to know what hill they’d climb over the following chapter.…

Some people might think that George is not a true friend to Lennie. They might think this because George kills Lennie. George could have run away with Lennie instead of killing him, or he could have let Lennie run away on his own. He killed Lennie because it was the best option he had. The mob could have found Lennie, and Lennie would just mess up again. Also he killed him peacefully, which is better than any other form of death and a sign of compassion. If George didn’t kill Lennie Curley’s mob would have killed him in a more painful way, which George would not…

Since the very beginning I always thought Lennie was incapable of apprehending what goes on. That doesn’t seem like the case now. Lennie is intelligent enough to see the damage and trouble he has caused. To interpret his thoughts, his mind creates hallucinations of his Aunt Clara and of a Rabbit. The mirage of Aunt Clara speaking in his voice is a way in which he scolds himself; for always causing trouble for George. “And when she spoke, it was in Lennie’s voice. “I tol’ you an’ tol’ you, ‘Min’ George because he’s such a nice fella an’ good to you.’ But you don’t never take no care. You do bad things.”…

Regardless to the fact Lennie is considered one of the principle characters in ‘Of Mice and Men’, he is arguably the least exciting. Throughout the novel he seems to be the same person as on the first pages, enduring no development, growth or significant changes. His character is very simple, in most scenes he is in, it is reinforced that he is very strong, he enjoys petting soft things and is devoted to George and the American Dream, that he and George will someday own a farm. It is this simplicity and helplessness in everyday life that earns the readers sympathy, and also forms the idea in the reader’s mind that Lennie is doomed. The powerful impact is created by the inevitability of Lennie’s death, so the reader’s sympathy and understanding…

    1. Although George and Lennie have been travelling together for a long time, their friendship can be quite strained and weak at times. Due to Lennie’s childish nature and forgetful memory, George is often frustrated and rages on about how his life could’ve been without Lennie. “God a’mighty, if I was alone I could live so easy. I could go get a job an’ work… get a gallon of whisky, or set in a pool room and play cards or shoot pool.” (pg. 13) However, they still care for each other and due to their sensitivity of each other’s feelings a mutual relationship of empathy and support is developed, therefore mending their friendship.…

Many have argued that George did the wrong thing of killing Lennie and that this makes him a bad friend. George isn’t a great friend either. He’s grumpy and bossy. The way George behaves towards Lennie is just very horrible.” if I was alone I could live so easy. ..No messes at all…stay in a cat house all night… I could put you in a cage…” George may have exploded and spilt all that anger out by mistake but when someone says things like that part of it must be true. George has his moment of frustration and that understandable but Lennie is like a child and they too make mistakes so Lennie can’t be blamed for being born with a mental disorder. He also makes lennie seem like a burden. “Whatever we ain’t got, that’s what you want. God a’ mighty, if I was alone I could live so easy. I could go geta job an’ work, an’ no trouble. No mess at all…” Lennie can bring trouble to a person’s way of living. He has to be looked after and it makes George question and blurt out that taking responsibility of Lennie is too much to handle. These quotes signify that George had in fact been a bad of a friend he was to Lennie.…
