Should George Have Killed Lennie

In John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie are two friends who leave to work on a ranch where Lennie gets in trouble. Lennie gets in trouble when he kills an innocent lady and runs off. George and the other men set off to find Lennie, but george leaves them to find Lennie himself. After George finds Lennie, he makes him feel happy and excited for what they will have in the future. George should not have killed Lennie because Lennie was slow and did not know how strong he really was, and George was Lennie’s best friend, but Lennie still had killed a innocent woman. One reason george should not have killed Lennie is because Lennie did not realize how strong he really was. As steinbeck writes, “He shook her then, and he was angry with her. And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck”(91) this shows that Lennie was trying to get her to stop screaming, but instead accidentally broke her neck. Also Lennie says, “I’d pet ‘em, and pretty soon they bit my fingers and I pinched their heads a little and they they was dead because they was so little”(Steinbeck 10).
However, George was Lennie’s bestfriend and they had plans to make their lives better for the future. Lennie says, “Because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, that’s why” (Steinbeck 14). In this quote from the story Lennie is explaining that they have each other to look after showing that they are friends and they trust each other. Also George says, “some day-we’re gonna get the jack together and we’re gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an’ a cow and some pigs” (Steinbeck 14). In this quote george is saying that Lennie and him have the same dreams for the future that they are both working for. George and Lennie were bestfriends and bestfriends do not let each other down, so George should not have killed
