Exploring the Difference Between Social Work and Psychology
Before attending Contemporary Social Work lectures, I did not think I would have any interests of it. The reason for me to choose General Theme A in year 2 because I like Psychology and this is the one and only reason for me to study in community college. Base on my pervious understanding, all about social work is to learn how to help people and what is the difference between it and Psychology is that the main focus of social work is a group of people and that of Psychology is individual. However, after taking this course, I have a different view.
Different concepts and theories are taught during lectures and the topic. When I start writing this self-reflective paper, I have spent about 20 minutes to think about what concept of theory I should choose in this paper. What I appeal most is “The Knowledge Base of Social Work”. As I did not have much volunteer experiences, I thought that those methods in helping people should within home-visit donating money and distributing resources. However, after lecturer 4, I realized that different perspectives can be used in viewing the problem, which mean my past understanding about social work was very narrow. Also, the other reason is that I can apply those perspectives into my group project. My topic of group project is about visually impaired person, we use Generalist Perspective to analyze the functions of The Hong Kong Blind Sports Federation (HKBSF) and the problems and possible solutions for the visually impaired. Besides, we have used Strengths Perspective with an interviewee as an example to find out how those visually impaired can use their strengths to contribute to their life and thus having an effective social functioning.
In order to make use of these perspectives, we studied the aims and services provided by different organizations that are servicing those people with visual impairment. We did not only look for information on Internet, but we also had interviews with social workers who are working there in
