Facebook was founded in 4th February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and friends in Harvard University. The website 's membership was initially limited by the founders to Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area in March 2004. It was later available to most university in United State and Canada, and by September 2006, to everyone of age of 13 and older.
In 4 years time, Facebook reached the Total active user of 100 million in August 26, 2008. (An "active user" is defined by Facebook as a user who has visited the website in the last 30 days) It has been increased to 500 million in July 2010 and reached the total active users of 1 billion in October 2012.
Why has Facebook grown so rapidly and become an international force so quickly?
Before Facebook’s popularize, there was MySpace, Hi5, and Friendster as the majority’s social network. However, they were easily defeated by Facebook during its raise from year 2004 to 2008.
MySpace was once the giant of social networking. With the slogan of “A place for friend”, it allowed users to make friend with others and stay in touch. On the other hand, Hi5 with the most inviting slogan “Who’s in?” utilize the curiosity of users to explore for friends. Most of the social networking is full of fake account and fake name, while people mask themselves to make friend with strangers that they knew nothing about each other.
When we look at Facebook’s Slogan: “Facebook is a social utility that connects you with the people around you”. It isn’t very catchy but it has shown the successful marketing strategy of Facebook.
While most of the users using fake name and fake account in facebook, they actually wouldn’t care much to the account. And that was the reason why the users give up Myspace or Hi5 accounts easily, after they feel bored on it.
Facebook connected the user with all the peoples around him, start from his classmate, to his relative, and his family.
