Imagine yourself being born into a world where nights and days are neither constant nor promised. You are fed three to five times a day, but no one is there to nurture and love you. Not even the numerous others crammed into your living space. You spend each day growing more and more frantic, scared, and sickly. This is life as you know it - from the day you are born, until your last dying breath. What I have just described is one of America’s worst ghettos. The life I speak of involves someone you know very well. He is your breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is the meat you eat. Today’s meat producing farms not only abuse their animals they also produce harmful diseases and environmental hazards; subsequently affecting our health. I strongly believe factory farms should be eliminated because they violate what should be basic humane treatment for animals.
What really is factory farming? Imagine thousands of animals crammed into dirty, windowless sheds most confined to small crates or wire cages. These conditions aren’t just for a few days or even weeks, these animals live like this their entire lives until they die from starvation, disease, or get sent to the slaughterhouse.
One of the most disturbing issues when it comes to factory farms is the sheer number of animals being housed together. They are kept completely devoid of sunlight, fresh air and for some, the ability to stretch their limbs. A wide variety of vitamin supplements and growth hormones are used to maintain animal health and improve production. Animals are also injected with growth hormones so they can grow at a faster rate, thus decreasing the time it takes to raise and slaughter them and keep up with the food industry’s high demands. Some would argue that the consolidation and massive number of animals in a typical factory farm operation allows companies to reduce cost. Consequently, the price of eggs, milk and meat are far below what they would otherwise be.
