Faith Development Theory
James Fowler’s theory of faith development is another theory that I found useful and directly in line with my own faith, beliefs, and desired line of work. Evans et al. (2010) claim that faith is shaped from unconscious structures with stages of faith development and that there is a distinction between content and structure. “Individuals at the same stage can hold beliefs that are vastly different (content) while their ways of thinking about and making sense of their beliefs (process) are similar. […] Some individuals never reach the more advanced stages” (p. 197). In this light, Chickering’s theory of identity development can be very useful in my own personal quest for success within educational counseling. According to Chickering and Reisser (1993) there are three admonitions that underscore the creation of educationally powerful environments: (a) Integration of work and learning: will allow me to maintain collaborative relationships and integrate work opportunities into the campus and produce ways for students to find internships and eventually jobs (b) Recognition and Respect for Individual Differences: will help me to be cognizant of the different backgrounds and needs of students and allow me to adjust my approaches to meet those needs. And (c) Acknowledgment of the Cyclical Nature of Learning and Development: will assist me to recognize that I will face difficult times and that new experiences and challenges will arise granting me new perspectives and a more complex understanding of how to provide opportunities to challenge individuals’ thought processes to gain a deeper understanding of them (Evans et al. 2010, p. 71). The aforementioned model and theories will help guide me and illuminate who I am and where I am going; remind me to create an environment for meaningful discussions with those I counsel, and to utilize and embrace the resources that are available to me to help one student at a time--equally and

In the absence of clarity of our faith, one is led to believe the norm is what proves to be popular within a society.     Student’s character development in higher education can be understood by Arthur Chickering’s theory of development. In his article, “The Seven Vectors: An Overview” Chickering delves into the idea that college students experience seven vectors of development throughout their college experience. These vectors of development must reach resolution for the student to achieve identity. The seven vectors posed by him are developing competence, managing emotions, moving through autonomy toward independence, developing mature interpersonal relationships, establishing identity, developing purpose, and developing integrity. These can be used as maps to help determine where students are and which way they are heading. Though Chickering did not necessarily state that a student’s movements through these seven vectors were sequential, the theory indicates that student’s must resolve through a specific group of vectors as a foundation towards progressing through later vectors. Although the vectors have more direction and magnitude, they build upon one another from simpler tasks to more difficult tasks. Achieving an increased level of sense in one vector not only strengthens assurance brought to adult tasks, but also affects the remaining six vectors of development. However, instead of focusing on only emotional, social, moral, or intellectual development, Chickering’s theory should have included a student’s demographics as well.…

    Fowler broke down the development of faith into six stages. Stage one is intuitive-projective faith. This stage is for pre-school children where their basic feelings about God, Jesus, and the Church are learned from their family. Stage two is mythic-literal faith. This stage is for children from ages six to twelve. Their beliefs becoming influenced from a wider circle of people such as teachers, friends, and clergy. Children start to become aware that there are different ways of understanding faith. Stage three is synthetic-conventional faith. This stage is from age twelve, sometimes through adulthood. This stage in concerned with the interpersonal need for approval by their peers. The person uses the views of significant others in developing their own views. Stage four is individual-projective faith. This stage may begin in late teenage years or early adulthood. The person focuses on taking responsibility as an adult for one’s own commitments and belief systems. Doubt, questioning, struggling with new concepts, and rejection of traditional assumptions are very typical. Stage five is conjunctive faith. This is a mature faith which many people never really reach. Commitment to political and moral values deepens in this stage. Stage six is universalizing faith. This stage is most rarely reached.
