Fallen Angels Essay

Many people believe that wars do not always have a valid reason to be fought. Some of the arguments are that it brings death of civilians that could have been avoided. But in truth, people die every day. War may cause some harmful things, but, if you think about it, don’t people? I believe, and encourage you to believe with me, that wars are in fact necessary. Not just because we are fighting for what we believe in, but good things do come of war. Such as brotherhood, patriotism to your country, and also unifies our country as a whole by us coming together.

One reason supporting my “War is good” is that it creates a special bond with somebody that cannot be replaced or duplicated. You become so close with the people you are fighting with and giving your all to protect each other. An example from Fallen Angels would be when Peewee and Perry are flying back

home on the plane together. They hold hands to comfort one another, knowing that everything is going to be alright. Fighting wars can unify a country creating a stronger nation. The whole country comes together to do anything they can to help out the troops. Anything they can do to better our economy as a whole. When people gather for protests about the war, it’s nice to see that we can come together peacefully to talk about problems that are at hand. An example from the video clip in Forest Gump showed them at a war gathering. They were sharing information about what was really going on in the war. It’s good that all those people could gather nicely to listen rather than having riots. (This did happen occasionally)

My last example of good from war is patriotism to ones country. This is a good thing because you can really see how devoted people are to their country and the people who have fought to protect. An example from Fallen Angels is with Sgt. Simpson. He

An example of war changing people for the better is Homer, as I have said war turns him into a leader who can be trusted to make important decisions. But an example of war changing people for the worse is Ellie. Ellie was forced to blow up a lawnmower, killing enemy soldiers to save her own life. This changes her and causes her to “Lose her innocence”. We can tell it changed her because of when she said; “It was hard for me to believe that I, plain old Ellie, nothing special about me, middle of the road in every way, had probably just killed three people.”, “When I thought of it baldly like that: killed three people, I was so filled with horror. I felt that my life was permanently damaged, that I could never be normal again, that the rest of my life would just be a shell ”. This shows that war can change people in good or bad ways. It is good for people like Homer, who got some sense knocked into him, but it is bad for people like Ellie he had a false sense of security that they would never be involved in a war.…

There is nothing good about a war. All the volunteers see is the American flag waving and that “their fathers and their father’s father defended the United States.” They have no idea what is in front of them. Most are sent off to war; some pay the ultimate price for patriotism. They can be killed in combat or maybe worse, scarred for life reliving their experiences.…

War is hell, but that’s not the half of it, because war is also mystery and terror and adventure and courage and discovery and holiness and pity and despair and longing and love. War is nasty; war is fun. War is thrilling; war is drudgery. War makes you a man; war makes you dead.” (Tim O’Brien, The Things They Carried)…

War is a very controversial topic for many people. Depending on the person’s outlook on the war, it can be depicted as something good or bad. War brings destruction wherever it goes, whether it is on a place or the people, and it ultimately is inevitable. War also protects a country from having further destruction and keeps the people at home safe from any danger. As a person can see in many recordings of war, there are many comparisons and contrasts that are expressed through soldiers, veterans, and civilians. Some comparisons seen in many of the testimonies given by effected people are dehumanization, dislocation, and alienation; but they also have contrasts that can be seen through nationalism, technological advancements, and the coming home for many…

“There was never a good war or a bad peace.” War, conflict between nations or fellow citizens with the use of arms. War is the most powerful threat we have on earth today. War can accomplish a variety of things in a variety of ways but for the soldiers they are stuck with an experience unlike any other known to the everyday man, stuck with memories and images of what it's like to be hunted by another man. Different people take different things away from war and are affected in different ways, but a change after a war is inevitable and for the vast majority it is difficult to recall his experiences of war yet they are prominently printed into their minds torturing them mentally for the remainder of their lives. This is evidently shown throughout the novel “The Things They Carried” which depicts the impact of the war in many forms, the suicide of an ex-soldier upon his return home; the lessening sanity of a medic as the constant death surrounds him; the trauma and guilt of all the soldiers after seeing their friends die, and feeling as if they could have saved them; and the deaths of the soldiers all of these offsets to their actions and personalities stem from immense difficult for soldiers to recall his experiences of war.…

War can be both positive and negative, depending on where you stand and what you stand for. During the Revolutionary War, there were Loyalists, Patriots, and those who were neutral, somewhere between the two opposing sides and living in the thirteen colonies. “Give me Liberty or give me death …” was famously spoken by patriots, but would it stand true? Patriots were believed to be fighting for freedom, equality, justice, liberty, representation, and the overall pursuit of happiness; while, Loyalists were those that were against the war and remained loyal to the crown. Loyalists thought the war to be brutal, avoidable, and only cause more trouble for many innocent lives. In My Brother Sam is Dead, Christopher and James Collier use the injustices and ironies of Ned, Sam, and Mr. Meeker’s death to influence Tim Meekers overall decision of neutrality regarding the American Revolution.…

Zachary Scott-Singley wrote an essay called “A Soldiers Thoughts”. His essay was based on his inner thoughts and questions, how he should and shouldn’t feel about war. Is war right or wrong? Are these people truly the enemy? What would you do to stay alive? I feel war leaves these questions open to discussion and defiantly can change based on the person and the involvement; but the work of war can change a person’s values and morals.…

War, what is it good for. What seems to be just a catchy song from the late 60’s, actually has an accurate depiction of the gruesome wars this world has gone through. In All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, WWI soldiers learn the cold hard facts about how nothing good comes out of wars. Not everyone is born a fighter, some are peer pressured into volunteering not knowing the treacherous path ahead of them. Throughout the book Remarque uses symbolism to express the gruesome effects on soldiers.…

One of the most controversial arguments is deciding whether war is helpful or more harmful than helpful; however, the story “War” by Luigi Pirandello and the poem Do Not Weep, Maiden, for War is Kind by Stephen Crane both reveal realistic outlooks on the topic. In “War”, Pirandello focuses in on a small group of travelers that are having trouble contemplating their children’s choice to go to war. One couple in specific, who creates the plot of the story, can’t cope with the death of their only son that occurred while he was deployed. Many different perspectives are provided from the other passengers as they all share one thing in common; they all have children at war. Do Not Weep, Maiden, for War is Kind is a short poem about the many horrors of war and how there is no good that comes from it. Whether war is right or wrong, it is something that will happen regardless of beliefs. “War” and Do Not Weep, Maiden, for War is Kind both promote realism in a topic that typically brings controversy. Realism is revealing the true side of something or learning how to accept a situation for what it really is in the least fantasized way.…

War is malicious doing that causes many unarmed civilians to to die. In World War I, almost 9,000,000 civilians were killed and for what? Their deaths served no purpose in aiding the war effort on either side. These civilians died from diseases, because almost all of their nation’s medicine and medical personnel were helping in the war effort, from massacres, caused by militaries destroying entire cities filled with people, and from starvation, due to practically all the nation’s food being channeled to…
