Tony Neumann lost his engine making factory job at Briggs and Stratton after the company moved from the Milwaukee factory to a cheaper out of the country manufacturer. After loosing his job his family took a huge economic hit which forced the mother to look for work to try to make up for the loss of income. Mrs. Terry Neumann competes to find work among the many others that are also looking for employment, after searching she finds employment working in a stock warehouse. Although this job makes far less then what her husband was previously paid, it was a job that brought money into the family to help them survive. The loss of income created a structural change within the family. With both Mr. and Mrs. Neumann working it caused a lack of structure within the family because the children started having to provide for themselves more without parents at home always. Without the support system the children were used to present they could have fallen into social problems including drugs, gangs or violence. The effect that unemployment had on this family caused enough stress to make Mr. and Mrs. Neumann question the safety of their marriage and it even involved them questioning divorce.
