Nursing experience has taught me that patients need individualized care plans and diagnosis specific interventions. Not every person or body is the same, it is essential that a practitioner have listening and critical thinking skills that allow one to find discrepancies in patient care. It is also important to
be involved with patients and their support system. Current experience has shown me that the more one is involved with patients and loved ones, rapport becomes stronger. With a strong rapport between patient and provider patients are more involved in their care. Patients begin to ask questions and follow recommendations, strengthening communication between patient and provider. I feel that I have strengthened this skill of communication and listening with every interaction.
My goal as a nurse practitioner is continue to build on my current skills. To build on the critical thinking and expand it beyond the bedside, allowing me to offer my services to the ever changing community. Georgetown is a strong institution that will enhance current skills and prepare me in my role of an FNP. I believe that my passion for patient care has allowed me to lose myself in the service of others, of which Georgetown bases its curriculum and values. Georgetown will provide a learning and growing environment that will continue to encourage my service of others.
As a nurse practitioner, I would like to take advantage of my cultural background as well as my bilingual ability. Working with the Latino community, it continues to emphasize the need of bilingual providers/practitioners. The availability of translators/interpreter services have made some impact in the care of the Latino community. However, there continues to be a gap. A lack of understanding of the culture that has allowed Latino patients to fall through the cracks. In obtaining my MSN and NP license, I would be able to offer my services to this disadvantaged community.
With an advanced degree, I aspire to become successful. To have a community that can reach out to me and believe that their best interest will always be considered. While providing individualized care as a result of listening to their health care concerns. Most of all, to provide the Latino community with a culturally qualified individual who can speak to them in Spanish.
